Your TV-style Forecast

In this assignment you are asked to prepare a short oral presentation, giving a short-range forecast for one of the main cities in the US. You are working in groups of three or four, so make sure to coordinate with your peers. The presentation can be a Power Point, a web page or a few transparencies. You are only allowed 8 minutes total, so that's approximate 2 minutes per person. Make sure to be succinct and well organized.

We will be using a timer, so you have to stop talking when the time is up.

Each group will be scored by peers - see TV-style Oral Presentation Score Sheet

Forecast cities

(1) Caribou, ME (KCAR)

(2) Denver, CO (KDEN)

(3) Louisville, KY (KSDF)

(4) Milwaukee, WI (KMKE)

(5) Virginia Beach, VA (KNTU)

(6) New Orleans, LA (KMSY)

What to cover

Forecast Range: your presentation is early in the afternoon, so your forecast should cover that evening and the following day.

You should try to include the following aspects:

Present weather:
- large scale view (satellite image)
- upper air (position and strength of the jet)
- surface map (lows/highs, fronts, rain/radar)

Forecast:
- forecast maps
- forecast summary (schematic --- words, cartoons etc)

Punch line

Given the limited time, you probably cannot include all of the above, but make sure to choose what's most appropriate to your weather situation.

Help

If you need help in making transparencies, we will meet in the 1615 classroom 1/2 hour before class (~1pm). We will be there to help you out.

Have fun.
