End of an Era:
NCWFC has ended on May 2006

MIT letter to the officials:

May 10, 2006

Dear Officials,

We were sorry to hear that the NCWFC has ended. As one of our students very simply put it: “It is the end of an era!”. Here at MIT we loved the competition and have participated for many years. We will surely miss it. Personally I started teaching Synoptic Meteorology at MIT in 1992 and remember the small group of graduate students who persuaded me to get involved with the competition.  We looked at the trophy cabinet full of prizes from the 1980’s and wanted to carry on the tradition.  The forecast competition offered us an opportunity to socialize but also helped us in the teaching of meteorology - especially to undergraduates - by bridging the gap between the theory and the real word.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all the people from Penn State, who, over the years, have made the NCWFC such a success.  We enjoyed the challenge but also the flexibility built in the NCWFC rules. We strongly hope that the new one, WXChallenge, can build on what we learned over the years from Penn State.

“Thank You” from all the member of the 2005-2006 MIT team:
